I use some utilities that I wrote that use entab and detab. You are
right that I use it for "poor man's text compression." In particular,
by trimming trailing blanks and entabing the result, some large
listing files are reduced to half their size without affecting their
appearance.
I like having entab/detab as functions in the language.
